Why I volunteered for the president role of Australian Kashmiri Association

Yavar Hassan Mir
AKA President 2024-25

Motto: “Bringing Kashmiris Together”

When I accepted the role of President of the Australian Kashmiri Association (AKA), it wasn’t for a
title or recognition. It was about giving back—to the community that raised me, to the culture that
shaped me, and to the people who continue to inspire me.
Our motto, “Bringing Kashmiris Together,” is more than just a statement. It’s a mission. A
commitment to unity, compassion, and cultural pride—across cities, generations, and borders.

A Personal Connection

I was born and raised in Kashmir and had the privilege of studying at Burn Hall School, one of the
Valley’s most respected institutions. Later, I pursued a career in civil engineering, and like many
others, found a new home here in Australia.
Outside of work, I’m passionate about long-distance running and off-roading—interests that keep
me connected to discipline, nature, and resilience. But no matter where life has taken me, my heart
has always remained with the Kashmiri community.

What the AKA Stands For

The Australian Kashmiri Association is a not-for-profit organisation committed to preserving our
shared heritage while fostering unity among Kashmiris living across Australia.

Our focus is twofold: community connection here in Australia, and support for our people back
home in Kashmir.

Here’s a glimpse of what we do:

  • Support for physically challenged children in Kashmir through direct aid and advocacy
  • Organising Qurbani during Eid al-Adha for families in need
  • Facilitating Zakat and Fitr contributions during Eid al-Fitr
  • Fundraising for critical causes affecting Kashmir and Kashmiris
  • Sponsoring initiatives such as a community cyclist ride for awareness and support
  • Attempting initiatives like a Community Blood Donation Drive to give back locally
  • Hosting community picnics and gatherings to build bonds within our diaspora

A Truly National Community

One of our most meaningful traditions is the Annual Year-End Event, held during the Christmas
break somewhere between Sydney and Melbourne. This event brings Kashmiris from across
Australia together in one place—to connect, celebrate, and share their experiences.

It’s a reminder that no matter where we live, we are part of something larger than ourselves. A
culture. A history. A community.

Why I Stepped Forward

Leadership, to me, is about service. I took on this role because I believe in our collective strength—
because I’ve seen what we can achieve when we come together with purpose.

This role is an opportunity to:

  • Listen to the diverse voices in our community
  • Create spaces for connection and belonging
  • Support our youth, empower our women, and honour our elders
  • Bridge the gap between where we are and where we come from

I believe the future of our identity lies in what we build here—together.

Looking Ahead

As President, I don’t see myself as the leader of a group—I see myself as part of a movement. A
movement to strengthen cultural ties, foster meaningful relationships, and make a difference both
locally and globally.

The Australian Kashmiri Association belongs to all of us. Whether you’ve just arrived in Australia or
have lived here for decades—this is your community.

Let’s continue to shape it, grow it, and support it—together.

Let’s continue Bringing Kashmiris Together.
