At AKAI, our mission is to coordinate projects that alleviate distress and foster development in Kashmir. Since December 2018, we’ve been proud to sponsor 10 specially-abled students at the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) in Kashmir. Last fiscal year, we successfully raised nearly Rs 5 lac, which has helped cover the monthly cost of Rs 6,500 per student for tuition, transportation, and allied therapy services.
Founded in 1970, VMS has been dedicated to the comprehensive rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. In 1999, they launched Shafaqat Special School to support children with mental, orthopedic, speech, and hearing challenges. Today, 72 students benefit from therapy, education, and personalized support provided by a dedicated team of therapists, teachers, and nurses.
In 2015, VMS further expanded its mission by establishing the Shafaqat Inclusive School, offering education up to the 8th grade for specially-abled students with nearly normal IQs. The school has specialized teachers for children who are deaf or speech-impaired. Many of these students have achieved academic excellence, with six recently topping the overall merit list—a truly remarkable accomplishment!
From past few years generous AKAI members have been sponsoring 10 students. If you want to know more about it please get in touch with AKAI team.
This year, our goal is to support 20 students, and we encourage you to consider sponsoring a student or donating what you can. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps a child in need back home.
